Possibly collection of M. de Mortain, his sale Paris 5 feb. 1776, n°50 (with dimensions 22 pouces by 27 pouces) (59 x 72cm):
Possibly Collection of Prince de Conti, his sale, Paris, 8 ap. 1777, n°519 ; “des instruments de musique , des coquilles et autres objets peints sur une toile de 22 pouces de haut sur 27 pouces de large” sold 28 livres to Pierre Remy (the expert).
The painting at the Prince de Conti Sale was drawn by Gabriel de Saint Aubin in the margin of his catalog (see illustration below).
Louis de Bourbon (1716 - 1776), Prince de Conti was one of the most important collectors of his time. He was particularly found of pictures and works of art but also of shells and music.
