Pastel on paper lined on canvas 80 x 99 cm. Signed R Thegerström and dated 1888 Paris.
PROVENANCE
Sotheby's, New York, LA Belle Epoque - Paintings and Sculpture, May 7, 1998.
Åmells, Stockholm.
Private Collection, Stockholm.
Robert Thegerström studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm during the years 1876-80 at the same time as Ernst Josephson, Carl Larsson, Ander Zorn, Karl Nordström and Richard Berg, among others. After his academy years, he continued artistic training in Paris at, among others, the Académie Julian in Paris. In particular, he was introduced to the currently prevailing open-air painting with a freer and wider brushwork. Thegerström was very social and had a great association with Swedish colleagues even during his years in France. Summers were spent with the Swedish colony at Gréz, a few miles south of Paris.
In 1885, Thegerström organized himself together with the Opponents, who put forward demands on the Academy of Fine Arts for modernisation and reform of art education itself and support for artists. The demands were rejected, which led to the formation of the Artists' Association in the following year.
Not examined out of frame, framed under glass. For further information and condition report, contact cecilia.berggren@auktionsverket.com.
