Original frame PROVENANCE Professor Johan Gottfrid Boon, née Petterson (Slöinge parish Halland 1886-1981 Stockholm); then inherited within the family until 2022:1 EXHIBITED Lund, Lund University, Carl Wilhelmson's exhibition of paintings and etchings from the period 1916-1923 at the University's Art Museum, 3-24 February 1924, no. 57 as "Segelsömmar" LITERATURE The artist's handwritten list of his works (MS) during 1923, no. 585 as "Segelsömmar (W)" In Wilhelmson's own handwritten list of his works, the painting is marked with "W" which stands for Weimar color - a lighter, slightly thinner form of oil paint, which results in a drier expression. Wilhelmson has not allowed the paint to completely cover the canvas. which gives the motif a slightly fluttering expression. In his quest for a simplified painting, where both colors, light effects and formal language were refined, he most closely approached French Neo-Impressionism and its technique of painting with spots of unmixed color.

In the same year that Wilhelmson painted "Segelsömnad", he executed his famous portrait of the art patron Hjalmar Lundblom (1855-1926) (Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde) "Sewing Girl", a fresco painting by Carl Wilhelmson executed around 1927, is a closely related work (Bohusläns Museum (UMO33715). The motif is taken from the artist's home in Fiskebäckskil and depicts one of his daughters with a view of Bökeviken.

Making sails, like making nets, was an everyday occupation for the fishing population. Despite this, Wilhelmson, among the large number of descriptions of the living conditions of the fishing population he carried out during his lifetime, has only once previously dealt with this subject; "Girls who mend sails", made in Brittany in 1893 (Private property). Depicting people engaged in needlework has a long tradition in European art. The earliest example is "The Buttonmaker" by Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) (The National Gallery of Art, Washington). Wilhelmson may have seen this painting during his stay in Brittany, as it was then owned by Pierre-Armand-Jean-Vincent-Hippolyte, Marquis de Gouvello de Keriaval [1782-1870], Château de Kerlévénant, Sarzeau, Morbihan, Brittany.
