"On the wall hang a number of beautiful oil paintings, among which a life-size portrait of Johan Leonard Wittenberg, son of the army commander known during the Thirty Years' War, is particularly noticeable. It is signed Ehrenstrahl and is one of the great "counterfeiter's" very best and most brilliant works", writes Ebba De la Gardie.
Leonard Johan Wittenberg was the son of Arvid Wirtenberg von Debern who is better known as Field Lord, Baron and Count Wittenberg. Leonard Johan was count of Nyborg, baron of Loimijoki, lord of Nynäs, Ylttis, Johannesberg etc., baptized in Leipzig and studied in Tübingen in 1661 and in Heidelberg in the years 1662-1664, where he became rector illustris at Heidelberg University. He became a lieutenant colonel in the Hälsinge regiment in 1670, colonel of commissioned Swedish and Finnish horsemen in 1672, colonel of Turku County's cavalry regiment in 1673 and major general of the cavalry in 1676. In the Battle of Lund in 1676, he was the head of the second line of the Swedish right wing.
In 1673 he married Countess Polydora Christiana Wrangel of Salmis, born in 1655 but who died in childbirth in 1675 in Stade. She was the daughter of the Reichsmarschall and the great field general Count Carl Gustaf Wrangel and his wife Anna Margareta von Haugwitz, Skokloster Castle. In 1674, Polydora gives birth to a daughter, Mariana Margareta, who later marries the lieutenant-general Count Christian Ludvig von Ascheberg.
The portrait above was made in 1677 and in 1679 Leonard Johan dies in Riga without sons and ends the family on the side of the sword. He was buried in 1680 in Riddarholm church, but was later buried in Hornska graven in Badelunda church, Västmanland, where his wife also rests.
David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl is rightly called the father of Swedish painting. After studying in Amsterdam for the animal painter Juriaen Jacobsz, he was employed as a counter-painter by Field Marshal Count Carl Gustaf Wrangel, who was then Governor-General of Pomerania, and accompanied him to Sweden in October 1652. After two years, he went out again to Europe, to Italy, France and England, to further immerse himself in painting. When he returned to Stockholm in 1661, he was appointed court engraver, where his first task was to "make eight busts of the dowager queen" Hedvig Eleonora. After the mid-1670s, his activities became increasingly extensive and in the studio on Svartmangatan he employed several young artists, including the talented nephew David von Krafft. In 1674, David Klöcker was ennobled by Karl XI with the name Ehrenstrahl.
The current portrait of Field Marshal Wittenberg is one of the artist's most well-painted and magnificent works. Executed during his absolute most brilliant period in the 1670s - only three years after Stockholms Auktionsverk was founded by the lord baron Claes Rålamb!

The highlight of the Swedish classic department is Carl Larsson’s Garden Scene from Marstrand. The painting is Swedish summer personified and an exquisite example of Larsson’s watercolour painting at its best. Several other en plein air painters from the late 19th Century are represented, such as Bruno Liljefors, Frits Thaulow and Per Ekström. The latter’s atmospheric painting Summer landscape, Chantilly, allows the viewer to get up close to nature. The auction also includes a unique collection of works by the animal sculptor Arvid Knöppel, which show his versatility and skillfulness as a sculptor and illustrator. The notable artist Axel Törneman is also represented with a larger collection of works. The painting Archer, depicting his son Algot, is perhaps the auction’s most colourful masterpiece.
The international department presents works by artists such as Emelie Preyer and the French symbolist Henri Martin alongside the artist Bartholomeus Sprangers, who was one of the first artists to immerse himself in the 16th Century Mannerism, which can be seen in the auction’s beautiful work Allegory of the Goddess of Victory. The Old Master department also features a portrait depicting Count and Major General Leonard Johan Wittenberg by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, executed in 1677, only three years after Stockholms Auktionsverk was founded in 1674!
