JOHAN KROUTHÉN 1858-1932 Summer landscape with flowering fruit trees and lilac Signed and dated Johan Krouthén 1920. Oil on canvas, 80 x 110 cm.
Johan Krouthén's painting is associated with the blooming orchards, pecking chickens and the depictions of the lushly idyllic summer landscape of Östergötland.
Johan Krouthén grew up in Linköping and was the son of a merchant. As a 20-year-old he entered the Art Academy in Stockholm, he had previously studied under Edvard Perséus. For a few years, he traveled around Europe and eventually settled in his home town, where he mainly depicted the pastoral life of the home village. The breakthrough came after a visit to the Danish painters' colony on Skagen in the early 1880s. During the 20th century, Krouthén's Eastern Gothic farm idylls became the classic and popular image of his artistry.
