NIELS PETER HOLBECH Denmark 1804-1889 Portrait of mill owner Ernst Friedrich Meyer, wearing black coat with white cravat, and his wife Christine Catharina, née Tauson, wearing blue silk dress with thin lace collar, lace cap tied with white silk bow Oil on canvas, a pair , oval, 36 x 29 cm each.

Ernst Friedrich Meyer (1782-1851) was born in Hanover and moved to Karlshamn in Blekinge in 1808. At the time, the city was the country's tenth largest. Trade and business supported the business world. Ernst Friedrich Meyer was a successful businessman and established a partnership with another merchant, Johan Henrik Winberg, who had also recently moved to Karlshamn. Their trading house and shipping company was named Winberg & Meyer. In 1822, Ernst Friedrich Meyer bought Granefors mill, in Froarps village, in Blekinge. He was married to the customs administrator's daughter Christine Catharina Tauson (1791-1870).

The Danish portrait painter Niels Peter Holbech (1804 -1889) was a student of the Danish Golden Age painters Christian August Lorentzen and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He received several assignments in Sweden and lived his last years in Karlshamn, where he died.
