Sir William Newzam Prior Nicholson was a British artist known for his work as a painter, illustrator, and designer.

He was born on February 5, 1872, in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England.

Nicholson came from a creative family. His brother-in-law was the renowned English painter and printmaker James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He was a versatile artist, known for his work in various mediums. He painted landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, often using bold shapes and a limited colour palette. He was a skilled printmaker, creating woodcuts and lithographs. He is noted for his series of prints portraying the British aristocracy.

He contributed illustrations to several publications, including books, magazines, and newspapers and was involved in decorative arts and designed furniture, pottery, and other decorative items, often influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement.

Connection to the Beggarstaffs: He collaborated with his brother-in-law, James Pryde, under the pseudonym "J. & W. Beggarstaffs," creating innovative and influential poster designs. Nicholson's work had a significant impact on British art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His contributions to various artistic fields left a lasting impression.

He continued to work and teach art throughout his life and passed away on May 16, 1949.
