Biography

Born in Riversdale, South Africa, in 1923, Johannes Petrus "Hannes" Meintjes was a prolific and multifaceted figure in South African art and culture. Meintjes’s artistic talent was apparent from a young age. He began his serious art studies in Cape Town under the guidance of Florence Zerffi. His artistic journey was deeply influenced by the German expressionism he encountered in the works of artists like Maggie Laubser and Irma Stern, with whom he later became close friends. This early exposure shaped his unique style, which was a powerful fusion of his academic training and a highly personal, emotional vision. Meintjes was not only an artist but also a celebrated author and historian, earning him the moniker of "Renaissance Man".

Painting the Soul of the Landscape

Meintjes was best known for his landscape paintings, which often depicted the rolling hills, rural settlements, and wildlife of Southern Africa. Working primarily in oils, he used a rich palette and expressive brushwork to capture not just the appearance of a place but its atmosphere and emotional resonance. His compositions balanced accuracy with interpretation, inviting viewers to feel the heat of the sun, the weight of the air, and the spirit of the land. While rooted in realism, his work often carried an impressionistic sensibility, using light and colour to evoke mood.

Legacy Across Continents

Over decades, Meintjes exhibited in galleries across Southern Africa, Europe, and North America. His paintings found homes in both private collections and public institutions, appreciated for their ability to bridge cultures through the universal language of landscape. Even after his passing in 2015, his art continues to resonate, serving as a visual testament to the landscapes and communities he loved. For many, Meintjes remains a painter who gave form and colour to the lived experience of Southern Africa, preserving its beauty for generations to come.
