The artist James Bates was born in Staffordshire, England in 1958 and identifies as a brutalist artist who is not afraid to mix techniques and develop new ways of working.

Bates is now based and active in Sweden.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Liverpool, he attended The Royal College of Art in London where he received a Master of Art degree.

In 1984, he received a bilateral scholarship from the British Council/Swedish Institute and attended the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.

In 1985, he received a Henry Moore scholarship and became a British Council Guest Artist in Residence in Stockholm.

Bates has exhibited both nationally and internationally and will be exhibiting at Galleri Carl in Östermalm, Stockholm, during the spring.

Bates uses various techniques and exhibits under thematic subjects. The artworks are often developed over a long period of time.
