Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), "Patavia", woodcut depicting the city of Passau in Bavaria, lower part of book pages from the German edition of "Liber Chronicarum", Nuremberg 1493. Verso with text and portraits.

Liber Chronicarum is an illustrated encyclopedia of historical events and biblical paraphrase. Subjects include the history of mankind in relation to the Bible, illustrations of mythological creatures, and the history of biblical and secular cities. It was written by Hartmann Schedel in Latin and translated into German by Georg Alt. The woodcuts were completed by, among others, Michael Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The encyclopedia is one of the first early printed books to successfully integrate text and illustrations.
Condition
Slightly yellowed. Dirt and stains in the margin, and discoloration along the center fold. Repair along the center fold. The upper part of the center fold replaced and with a small retouch in the framing contour line. Lower corners with repairs. Lower part of two originally larger text pages.
Unframed.
