Born in Staffordshire, England in 1958, artist James Bates identifies as a brutalist artist who is not afraid to mix techniques and develop new ways of working.

Bates now lives and works in Sweden.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Liverpool, he attended The Royal College of Art in London where he obtained a Master of Art degree.

In 1984, he received a bilateral scholarship from the British Council/Swedish Institute and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.

In 1985 he received a Henry Moore Scholarship and became the British Council Guest Artist in Residence in Stockholm.

Bates has exhibited both nationally and internationally and will be exhibiting at Carl Gallery on Östermalm in Stockholm this spring.

Bates makes use of various techniques and exhibits under thematic topics. Artworks are often developed over a long period of time.
