Description

An unusual African commemorative object modelled in red clay, in two parts. The base with a life sized hand on circular platform, the hand supporting a single stemmed, triple cup on each of which are scratched inscriptions; “1875 East Griqualand”, “1885 Tembuland”, “1894 Bondoland”. Inscription on the base “From Chief J George Moshesh” continued on hand, “To HE Lord Buxtom”. Overall 23 cm high, 17 cm wide.

Condition

Old repairs with staples, damage in places. Collection number to the base.
