Photograph depicting The great white hope Jess Willard against Jack Johnsson 1915 Image area 16.5 x 23 cm Info: Willard, who worked as a cowboy, only started boxing professionally at the age of 27. In 1915 he became world heavyweight champion by defeating Jack Johnson in Havana by knockout in the 26th round. After defending his title against Frank Moran in 1916, Willard then lost the title to Jack Dempsey on July 4, 1919 in Toledo, Ohio. The match was broken after the third round and has been called the "Massacre in Toledo" when Willard had his collarbone as well as his jawbone and ribs knocked off and at the same time lost several teeth. With his 199 cm and 111 kg, Willard was one of the physically largest world champions ever.
