Peter J. Lassen (1930—2019) was one of Denmark's most influential designers in the second half of the 20th century and founder of Montana Furniture. After an early career as a naval officer, he began working at the family firm Fritz Hansen, where he came to collaborate with prominent architects and designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon, Piet Hein and Verner Panton. These meetings shaped his outlook on design and gave him a strong sense of the balance between function, aesthetics and the freedom of the user.

In 1982 Lassen founded Montana in Haarby on Funen. Here he developed a modular shelving system based on a simple square module measuring 60 x 60 cm. The system could be combined in countless ways and became the basis of an entire concept that he himself described as a system of freedom. By allowing the user to decide for himself the shape, color and composition, the furniture became a personal and changing solution rather than a ready-made answer.

Montana's expression is characterized by austere simplicity, clear structure and great flexibility. Equally important was the richness of colour introduced by Lassen, with a wide range of colours offering playfulness and individuality. The company established itself as a pioneer in environmentally conscious production and allowed the entire production to take place in Denmark.

Peter J. Lassen remained active in Montana until his passing in 2019. His vision lives on in furniture that combines function and aesthetics with a strong sense of individual needs and personal expression. Montana has thus become an international symbol of Scandinavian design that is as timeless as it is flexible.
