ARNE NORELL. Armchair, “Gary”, also called “The Thumb/Thumb”, Westbergs Möbler, 1950s.

Legs in birch, upholstered seat and back upholstered in cotton fabric.

Height 78, width 74, depth 81, seat height approx. 40 cm.

PROVENANCE:
Purchased new in the 50s by the parents of the current owner.

HISTORIAN
“Thummen”, designed in 1952 and was shown for the first time during Önsehem's exhibition in the same year along with other future Swedish classics such as Greta Magnusson Grossman's well-known floor lamp “G-33". The design of the armchair is typical of the radical early Swedish 1950s when the organic and assymetrical design took place at exhibitions and fairs. Arne Norell, meanwhile, was employed as a workshop master with Gösta Westerberg and the thumb is an example of his early production for the firm.
