Description

The wooden boxes of rectangular form with sliding covers, one signed and polychrome painted with figures in courtly scenes. The box sides featuring a procession of figures with horses, camels, elephants and chariot. One side showing a hunting scene with a tiger. Larger box 19.3cm x 7.5cm x 8.5cm tall including cover handle. (2)

The larger box comprising eighty finely painted circular cards / tokens individually decorated, approx 4.7cm diameters.

The smaller box comprising a quantity of cards fused in four groups with four loose cards, approx. 5cm diameters.

Provenance: Property of the late Anthony H. Christie (1922-94). Professor of Southeast Asian Studies at SOAS.

Condition

Larger box overall in good condition for it's age and the cards are well preserved. Some small patches of loss to decoration around the base of the box in places.

Smaller box with more wear to the box edges with small section of loss to corner of box under the handle. Majority of cards fused together with the loose pieces in very worn condition.
