Description

Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg (1833-1904), rescuing castaways from a raft, oil on canvas, double-signed, lower left 'C. Kuwasseg fils', ca. 55 x 100 cm, with stucco frame approx. 80 x 124 cm

PROVENANCE: Hamburg private collection, formerly Christie's auction; London, 9.11.2000, lot 611, cf. catalog fig. P. 276

The French painter Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg specialized in landscapes, in particular the artistic landscapes of Brittany and Normandy; he also created seascapes and city views. In order to differentiate himself from his father, the Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg, he signed 'Kuwasseg fils'. Before turning to painting, Charles Kuwassegg went to sea. He received his first lessons in his father's studio, later with Jean Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager and Eugene Isabey and, like many artists of his time, was influenced by the Barbizon School.
