Second third of the 20th century, The mask is dominated by an extended hooked beak, bulbous circular eyes, and a sharply domed brow. A stylised zoomorphic figure is carved atop the crest, depicting a four-legged creature with curved limbs, possibly a bush spirit or emblematic animal. A plaited fibre headband is attached around the brow, 87cm high 21cm wide

Note - These beaked masks are linked to warrior and hunting societies, and are commonly referred to as “gunye ge" masks. They are typically worn during ceremonial dances involving displays of strength, speed, and agility. The beak form symbolises fierce protection, wildness, and heightened spiritual awareness, allowing the performer to channel bush spirits that dwell beyond the limits of the human village.
