Description

Heinrich Hartung (1851-1919), spring landscape with mill, oil on canvas, 1902, signed and dated, ca. 68 x 100 cm, with heavy stucco frame approx. 108 x 140 cm

As a Rhenish landscape painter, Heinrich Hartung belongs to the Koblenz dynasty of Hartung painters. After initial training with his father, he continued his education in Italy, Munich and Berlin. He then settled in Düsseldorf for a longer period of time, where he was a member of the Künstlerverein Malkasten before returning to Koblenz around 1900. During this period, numerous of his characteristic spring landscapes, Middle Rhine and Moselle landscapes were created. The theme of sun and spring is often in the foreground.

Condition

With horizontal tear (ca. 13 cm) in the lower part of the image, here unexpertly backed with adhesive tape on the back, otherwise with few signs of dirt and wear.
