The sculptor Hubert Nikolaus Lang came from Oberammergau and studied with Joseph Wackerle in Munich. In 1943 he received the important Villa Romana scholarship to continue his education in Italy and was on friendly terms with Hans Purrmann.
His Arcadian shepherd motifs are based on classic models on the one hand, but are also linked to the local woodcarving tradition of Oberammergau. His sculptures, created in the mid-1950s, are often compared with those of Barlach and Matarés.
