HISTORIAN:
Per Fischer was born in Otterstad, Skaraborg County, in 1877. After first pursuing studies for Halfdan Stroem in Kristiania in 1896, he studied at Königl. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Munich 1898-99. Then undertook study trips to Italy 1899-1900, Sicily 1905-06 and France in 1913.
Per Fischer had his debut exhibition at Valand in Gothenburg in 1902. As a member of the artists' association “De fri”, he participated in numerous group exhibitions, including in Malmö and Copenhagen in 1903, Stettin in 1904, Riga in 1910 and Düsseldorf in 1912. In addition, he participated in international exhibitions in Budapest in 1906, Rome in 1911, Cologne in 1912, Leipzig in 1914, Buenos Aires and San Francisco in 1915.
The legendary art journal “Arktos”, published by Harald Brising in 1908-09 at Albert Bonnier's publishing house, drew attention to Per Fischer's artistry in an article comparing him to the Secession, the groups of mainly German and Austrian artists and architects who in the 1890s and early 1900s left academies and official organizations to instead push the modern art movement forward under their own auspices.
Alongside painting, Per Fischer came to make a significant contribution to the modern original woodcut. Influenced by Japanese woodcarvers such as Hiroshige, he executed surface decorative leaves with buildings, landscapes and figures. Above all, here can be highlighted a suite of compositions with bathing figures. At the end of the 1910s, Per Fischer also began to engage in
home furnishing operations within Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Stockholm.
Per Fischer was a member of the Association of Original-Woodcuts and the Union Internationale des Beaux-Arts et des Lettres. He is represented in the Göteborgs Konstmuseum and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
