Derrière le Miroir was founded in 1946 by Aimé Maeght, who had opened his art gallery the year before. 253 issues (many doubles) were published -the last one in 1982- and the mix of poetry and texts on art by Apollinaire, Breton, Jouhandeau, Ponge an others, and original lithographic illustrations by the Maeght gallery artists (Alechinsky, Bacon, Bazaine, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Matisse, Miró, Tapies, to name but a few) made it collectible almost from the beginning.
