Charles XV (1826—1872) was not only King of Sweden and Norway, but also a dedicated artist. His artistry was mainly characterized by landscape painting, with a particular focus on Norwegian and Swedish nature motifs. During his life he had time to paint a number of works that have been exhibited at the Nationalmuseum, Gothenburg Museum, Norrköping Art Museum and the Royal Castles. Several of his paintings, such as Motif from Värmdö (1865) and Landscape from Hardanger (1872), have become esteemed examples of romantically inspired landscape painting.
His artistic interest arose early and he was tutored by prominent artists such as Johan Christoffer Boklund and Edward Bergh. His first participation in the exhibitions of the Academy of Fine Arts occurred in 1856, the same year that he became Viceroy of Norway. During this time he travelled extensively and sketched extensively, especially during his eriksgata in Norway, where fjords and valleys became recurring motifs in his works.
In addition to his own creation, Charles XV was also an important patron of art life in Sweden and Norway. His collection of some 500 paintings, many of them by Swedish artists, was bequeathed to the state. Through this donation, he helped to strengthen the Scandinavian art department of the Nationalmuseum.
