A. R. Penck (actually Ralf Winkler) is one of the outstanding German artists of the post-war period. His visual language, developed at the beginning of the 1960s, remained groundbreaking for international contemporary art and influenced artists such as Keith Haring, who explored Penck's works in New York at the beginning of the 1980s. Penck's artistic career took him from autodidactic beginnings, rejection and persecution by state security in the former GDR to international success, participation in Documenta 5, 7 and IX, the Venice Biennale and appointment as professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1988. Penck spent the last few years in seclusion in Dublin/Ireland.

Mounted on the back of the upper edge with mounting tape in three places in passe-partout.
