Robert Kummer studied at the Academy in Dresden and worked in the studio of Johan Christian Clausen Dahl from 1829. Study trips took him across Europe and all the way to Egypt, which provided him with rich study material for his atmospheric landscape paintings. Robert Kummer received the title of professor in Dresden in 1859. He was also a godchild and student of Caspar David Friedrich and gave the eulogy at his funeral. Larger paintings by Kummer can be found today, among others, in the Neue Meister Picture Gallery in Dresden and in the Chemnitz Art Collections. On the occasion of his 200th birthday in 2010, a major retrospective was held at the Neue Meister Gallery in Dresden.
