OSSIAN ELGSTROM
visual artist, illustrator, writer and ethnographer.
Studied at the Technical School in Örebro and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm
1906—1907, then in Copenhagen and Paris. He is today best known for his travels to
Lapland, Siberia and Greenland where he studied the way of life of the Arctic peoples
and myths which he presented in several books, drawings, etchings and paintings.
He also drew motifs from Norse mythology and the Icelandic
the literature of the saga. He also painted portraits and was active as a book illustrator and
as a cartoonist and contributor to various newspapers. Fr.om. In the 1930s he lived in
Torekov where he took an interest in the martian history and coastal shipping, as
he depicted in his paintings and drawings.
Elgström is represented at the National Museum, Moderna museet, Ethnografiska
Museum and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Museum of Art, Malmö
museum, Ájtte: Swedish mountain and Sami museum in Jokkmokk and Lillehammer
museums.
