Description

Oil on panel, 26 x 34 cm. Frame dimensions 21 x 29 cm. Signed L Rönquist and indistinctly dated 190? Rome

Lotten Rönquist was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1884. Among his fellow students at the Academy were Gottfrid Kallstenius, Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius, Anton Genberg, Anshelm Schultzberg, Carl Johansson, Verner Åkerman, Carl Flodman, Carolina Benedicks-Bruce, Ida Gisiko-Spärck, Hanna Pauli and Hilma af Klint. In 1890 she broke up from Sweden and settled in Paris, a time that shaped her as an artist. She took in the new influences and her painting was characterized by open-air painting but also with clear influences from the bold color treatment of the uncompromising Impressionists.

During 1892 Rönquist was active in the artist colony Grèz-sur-Loing where at this time his friends Waldemar Nyström, Gottfrid Kallstenius, Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius, Carolina Benedicks-Bruce and William Blair Bruce also painted.

Lotten Rönquist continued to Italy and here performs some of his best paintings from places such as Capri and Rome. The panel of the auction is executed with bold brushstrokes, especially the vegetation in the foreground and one is also struck by the refined color treatment with green and brown in different shades. It is a painting of the highest quality reminiscent of Anshelm Schultzberg's production in France in the 1890s.
