Visual artist Anitra Lucander (1918-2000) was a prominent Finnish modernist and a
pioneer of abstract art. Her artistic career began in the post-war period, when
the Finnish art scene began to internationalize at a rapid pace. Influenced by developments on it
on the international art scene, Lucander created his own approach to art and a
their own way of expressing themselves.
Anitra Lucander was born in 1918, and grew up in an intellectual Finnish-Swedish family in Helsinki, Finland.

After a brief separation from her family, she decided to become an artist.
The breakup of the short-lived marriage in the 1940s and the subsequent freedom made it

Daytime studies had been a challenge and Lucander therefore enrolled at Fria Konstskolan. There studied
between 1946 and 1949, as a pupil of Sulho Sipilä and Sam Vanni, among others.
Lucander's early career was marked by post-war shortages of materials and suitable
work spaces. She had to move frequently and living conditions limited both
the size and color of her work. In the mid-1950s, she found a suitable
working space in a studio building recently built by the Finnish Artists' Association in Hagalund. here
Lucander finally had the opportunity to concentrate entirely on painting and on experimenting with
various materials, which resulted in a very productive and creative period in her career. During
in the same period Lucander had his first solo exhibitions, of which the exhibition at the Gallery
Artek 1955 has been considered the most important for her breakthrough as an artist.
In the stimulating and open atmosphere of the Free Art School, Lucander had been given the opportunity to
discover the latest international phenomena in art. After the studies, many trips followed
to Paris, where she became acquainted with the international modernist orientations, among others
concretism. After a brief period of concretism, Lucander began to take an interest in Cubism and
collage technique, which led to the fact that over the years she developed her own imagery, which she
characterized as lyrical abstractionism.

This is the hallmark of Lucander's painting. The motifs of her semi-abstract urban landscapes with subtle colors,
often had impressions from distant lands.
From the 1960s onwards Lucander painted mainly in Kronohagen, in his rented attic studio
on Estnäsgatan. The balance between the abstract and the figurative and the interest in color remained
central elements of her art. She now began to work also with textile collages in larger formats and
collaborate with architects as color designers for public spaces. Influence of Lucanders
characteristic collage technique now began to be clearly visible even in her abstract paintings, where
the artist used rough raw materials to create a relief-like and vivid surface.
Towards the end of Lucander's career in the 1970s, portraiture as well as music and dance themes came into her
painting. The color palette became more delicate and the artworks became more poetic. The collection that is now in
sale has been owned by the artist's son and includes 17 works by Anitra Lucander from her three
decades-long career as an artist.
