Oil on canvas, 24 x 48 cm. Frame dimensions 35 x 58 cm. Signed Gerda Roosvall
Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1885-91 and continued her education in France and Italy for the following three years. In 1889 she was awarded the Ducal Medal and in 1890-91 she held the Ribbing Scholarship at the Academy. In 1891 she married the artist and professor Gottfrid Kallstenius. Roosval was fond of nature studies in the spirit of awakening open-air painting as in the auction painting Sunny Autumn Day, where light flows across the landscape.
A stay in the early 1890s in Grez-sur-Loing in France left lasting impressions. Roosvall's painting is characterized by a good sense of denomination and a confident sense of form.
.
She made her first appearance at a collection exhibition at Valand in Gothenburg in 1891. Five years later, she participated in an exhibition in Berlin. When the newly formed Society of Swedish Artists had its first exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1911, Roosvall participated with several paintings. In 1914 she was represented at the prestigious Baltic Exhibition in Malmö.
In 1931, when the exhibition of 1880s and 90s art opened at Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm, several of her works hung on the walls, among them the painting Spring in Paris purchased by the Nationalmuseum.
