' A trip to Paris and an encounter with the French painter Maurice Utrillo had a great impact on Heldt. Heldt's typical motifs include city views, window paintings, church towers, fire walls and, again and again, the Berlin houses, the sea of rubble after the war and the reconstruction of the city. Werner Heldt celebrated great successes immediately after the war and painted himself in an intensive creative frenzy from 1947, although the times for him were difficult and more marked by depression. Heldt stood between exile and internal emigration and rejected a professorship offered to him several times.
