At the unusual age of 41, Carl Ludwig Schmitz studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1858/1859 in Hans Fredrik Gude's landscape class. Schmitz was based in Düsseldorf and created romantic views of the Rhine and the Alps.

Some craquelure and slight traces of rubbing, frame with minor defects.
