According to orthodox church writings, Saint George was born in Beirut in the 3rd century. Before the Emperor Diocletian, he publicly professed to be a Christian. When he was threatened with persecution, he gave his belongings to the poor. He was convicted and tortured. According to myth, in prison he was comforted and healed by an angel. Saint George was martyred in the city of Nicomedia in 303.
