GUNNAR JOHNSSON (1917-2007)

Gunnar Johnsson captured movement in his abstract oil paintings in a way few other artists succeeded in. He exhibited both in Sweden and internationally, including in Spain and France, and often drew inspiration from the Spanish light.

At the beginning of his career, he was predicted a brilliant future. Upon its debut at Gummesons konsthall in Stockholm in 1951, Tidningen MT-Stockholm wrote: “Gunnar Johnsson sets an expressive point for the gallery's autumn exhibitions. He has shown himself as a fully mature and self-made artist.“

During his active period as an artist, Gunnar Johnsson had several solo exhibitions including at Gummeson 1951 and SDS hallen 1952 (debuts), then at Bleue in 1965, 1966 and 1976, at Maria in 1968 and 1978, at Engström in 1979 and at Hands Malmö in 1980. His work is included in collections such as Skåne's Art from the 50s, Liljevalchs, Moderna museet, the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts 1953 and in France and Spain. Akademiens & Statens 1974—1975 and 1978—1979.
