Alvar Aalto, born 3 February 1898 in Kuortane, Finland, and died 11 May 1976 in Helsinki, Finland, was one of Finland's most famous architects and designers. Alvar Aalto was a giant of modernism, known for integrating organic forms and natural materials into his designs, while adhering to the principles of modernism. His upbringing in the forest environment of Finland had a profound influence on his architectural philosophy, where nature was seen as both nourishing and austere.
Aalto's furniture design marked a significant departure from the metal chairs popular with his contemporaries, such as Marcel Breuer. After experimenting with chairs with tubular steel legs, Aalto transitioned to entirely wood-based designs and pioneered the use of bentwood in furniture. His innovative techniques for shaping plywood enabled the creation of ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing furniture. Together with his first wife Aino Marsio-Aalto and others, he founded the interior design company Artek.
