Alpha images. Pelé, the sought after and likely the first collector's image of the Brazilian football player, along with the complete team from the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. Twelve images in total, including Garrincha, Gylmar, Dejalma Santos, Bellini, Orlando, Nilton Santos, Didi, Vavá, Zagallo, Zito, Pelé + team picture. The images measure approximately 33 x 48mm. All images with a short text on the back.
Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022), is widely regarded as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, football players of all time. He represented the Brazil national football team from 1957 to 1971, and was only 17 years old participating in the FIFA World cup in Sweden in 1958. Hence, he holds the record as the youngest player ever to participate in a FIFA World Cup final. He secured the win with a header goal in the final minute of the game, leading Brazil to celebrate their first World Cup title with a 5-2 victory.
Alpha images were collectible images that came with the Alfa pastille and Alfa Bobbykola pastille boxes in Sweden. Many people purchased these candy boxes solely for the images they contained. Each box contained a small portrait of a sporting hero from that era. Between the years 1949 and 1961, approximately 1.700 athlete portraits were released.
