Värmlänningen and Gothenburg colorist Erling Ärlingsson was very fond of both Värmland and the west coast. He is one of the few painting fellows who was out at Koster and painted with Inge Schiöler. They were old comrades who had both had Tor Bjurström as an art teacher. When he visited the west coast, either with Inge Schiöler on Koster or with his friend Rune Brodin on Stenungsön, they took a boat trip out among the islands and painted. He studied painting at Valand's School of Painting in Gothenburg and Academie Scandinave in Paris. In addition to painting, boats and violins were two things that Ärlingsson mastered very well. He was fond of painting narrative works with people or landscapes.
