August Wilhelm Stryowski (1834-1917), snowball fight in front of a patrician house, oil on canvas, around 1870, signed, c. 147 x 109 cm, with heavy original stucco frame ca. 193 x 157 cm
PROVENANCE: Hamburg private collection, family property for over 80 years, acquired in Poland after 1945.
Stryowski studied at the Danzig Art Academy, later received a scholarship and continued to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow.
From 1870, Stryowski was one of the founders of the Gdansk City Museum (now the National Museum in Danzig).
The detailed genre painting shows the stately entrance to a patrician house in Danzig in front of which a flock of children have a snowball fight.
Condition
Partially with small sports of paint loss rubbed by frame on edges, restoration in the area of the stairs, here backed with patch on reverse.
