Description

JANE GUMPERT
Jane Gumpert was the niece of artist Robert Thegerström. She studied at
The Artists' Union School, where she met her future husband, Sigfrid Ullman.
Both Jane and Sigfrid then studied under Henri Matisse in Paris. In comparison with her husband, she took significantly greater impressions from her studies with Matisse. The marriage, however, meant that Jane Gumpert's artistry was inhibited and obscured by her husband's art. She thus did not receive the attention that her fine painting deserved.
It was only after the couple's divorce in 1929 that Jane began to participate in exhibitions.
Jane Gumpert had a small output and her early, Matissee-influenced paintings, of which the current work is a good example, rarely appear on the market.
Part of this production was acquired by Otto and Charlotte Mannheimer's fund. The Mannheimer couple were, together with Conrad Pineus, the most significant patrons of early modern art in Gothenburg.
