The Borghese fencer, bronze, first half of the 20th century Century, on the back of the base with the stamp 'Bronze Garanti' and the number '127', height ca. 54 cm, width approx. 38 cm, depth approx. 42 cm
The 'Borghese Fencer, 'or 'Borghese Gadiator,' is an ancient life-size statue of a warrior probably fighting a rider. The original bronze dates from the 3rd century BC. A marble copy was found in the 17th century during excavations commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese near Porto d'Anzio — possibly in the remains of a Nero villa — and is now in the Louvre in Paris. The sculpture was mistakenly called a gladiator due to old restorations, but it rather depicts a swordsman, “fencer”, although the original marble sword and shield are also missing.
Few signs of use.
