VERA FRISEN
Frisén grew up in Umeå but moved in adulthood to Stockholm where she attended Otte
Skölds School of Painting. She had her first solo exhibition in 1941 at Färg och Form in Sthlm and received glowing reviews (A Swedish Schjerfbeck; was one of the reviews) and the roughly 70 works were sold quickly. In the mid-1940s, she disappeared from public art life. She became depressed from selling and the performance requirements that followed from the inflated reviews became a burden. However, she did not stop painting her motifs from Västerbotten. She continuously visited this landscape for 45 years. In 1989, shortly before her death, she made a comeback at Färg och Form in Sthlm.
"But the most original are her depictions of the northern marshlands. The frieze is said to have been lying on its belly in the damp marshes, which can be sensed in paintings with a perspective from below and a high horizon line. Here, swaying blades of grass and occasional trees stand out in the foreground, like lonely individuals. Nature lyric which is at once totally unglamorous and absolutely wonderful.” Dagens Nyheters Birgitta Rubin, 28 November 2021, Review Vera Frisén exhibition Sotheby's.
Doubled canvas.
