ELLIS WALLIN (Sweden,1888-1972)
Visual artist, born 1888 in Uppsala. Studied at the Technical School in Uppsala 1907—1910, at the Althins School of Painting in Stockholm 1911—1912 and with Olle Hjortzberg at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts 1914-1920.
Wallin then moved to Paris where he was resident in 1920-33. His paintings were exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, Salon d'automne and Salon des Tuileries in 1926-1937. There he came into contact with the French neo-realism from which he took deep impressions. He also got to know and socialize with several of the great French artists of the time such as H. de Warocquier and Dunoyer de Ségonzac.
After several solo exhibitions in Paris he moved Ellis Wallin to Stockholm in 1933, where he painted portraits, still lifes and city motifs. He was one of the first Swedish artists to work on the French so-called belle matière painting. His art has been called “consistently elegant with a well-tuned colour scheme”. The color scales were dominated by gray, black, brown, blue, and green.
Ellis Wallin had a large number of exhibitions around Sweden, in galleries as well as in museums. Uppsala Konstforening showed a major retrospective of his art in 1938. He was also a successful cartoonist and graphic artist, creating etchings and dry-needle engravings, featuring, among other things, cityscapes.
Represented at Louvre in Paris, Ateneum in Helsinki, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Artists' House, Gothenburg Museum of Art, Malmö Museum, Borås Art Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, Örebro County Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Värmland Museum, Västerås Museum, Östersund Museum, Uppsala University Library and at the State Portrait Museum collection at Gripsholms Slott.
