Kelim is a type of oriental carpet characterized by its smooth-woven texture and geometric pattern. The word “Kelim” is derived from the Persian “gīlim,” which means “coarsely woven blanket.“These rugs are made using a special weaving technique in which the wrapping threads flip when the color changes, creating the characteristic diagonal pattern. This weaving technique gives the carpets a unique and reversible quality.
Kelim carpets are found primarily in various parts of the world, including the Caucasus, the Taurus Mountains in Turkey, and southern and northwestern Iran. Similar techniques are used in other regions as well, and the Yarl Lacquer technique is a related method. Explorer Mark Aurel Stein found kelims in Hotan, China, which dated to at least the fourth or fifth century AD, indicating their long history and occurrence over time. The Kelim technique is used in different variations, and the carpets fit well in different environments, from the kitchen table to the fireplace of the mountain hut.
