Description

Glazed earthenware. Numbered 836 (1896-97). Turner/former signature indistinct. Ø 25 cm.

Helmer Osslund was hired by Höganäsbolaget for the 1897 Art and Industry Exhibition. He designed some 70 models, of which at least a dozen were exhibited. The reception was a success, there was talk of Osslund as a bold experimental ceramicist, influenced by the artists he had met shortly before in Paris, Paul Gauguin and the Dane Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. However, the success did not concern Osslund who, after this isolated effort, left the pottery to return to painting. /MP
