Carl Malmsten, born 7 December 1888 in Stockholm, and deceased on 13 August 1972 in Solna, Stockhom, was a Swedish interior designer and furniture designer. Malmsten was a prominent furniture maker and is regarded as one of the foremost in its field in Sweden.
Malmsten's philosophy is characterized by a striving towards a Swedish character and simplicity. He was inspired by traditional styles, such as Gustavian style in the 18th century and everyday living in the 19th century. Ore stone used natural woods such as birch and furrow and emphasized the properties of wood in its furniture. He was considered particularly adept at creating seating furniture.
His work as an interior designer included assignments such as decorating Ulriksdal Castle, Sthlms Concert Hall and the headquarters of the Tändsticksbolaget. Through his involvement in craft courses and schools, Malmsten also helped to educate and inspire a new generation of furniture architects and designers.
