Original frame PROVENANCE Red Cross Hospital, Riksmarskalkens väg, Norra Djurgården, Stockholm, department V; Red Cross premises in Bergshamra outside Stockholm until 2014 Gottfrid Kallstenius contracted severe pleurisy and pneumonia in 1927 and was rehabilitated for a long time at the Red Cross Hospital in Stockholm, located on Riksmarskalkens väg, Norra Djurgården, which had been inaugurated the same year. The lack of artistic decoration in the hospital wards led Kallstenius to, after his recovery, execute forty-two landscape paintings between the years 1928-30 in small format, which he donated to the hospital. In connection with this pioneering work, he wrote an article in Svenska Dagbladet on 7 November 1929, "Art for hospitals", in which he advocated the artistic decoration of hospitals and rehabilitation institutions paid for through lotteries.
