Nils Fougstedt (1881-1954) was a prominent Swedish craftsman, sculptor, illustrator and decorator. He was born in Stockholm and also died there. Nils Fougstedt was the son of Lorenz Fougstedt and Ingeborg Pettersson and the brother of Arvid Fougstedt.
He was best known for his work in pewter arts and crafts and played an important role in inspiring Estrid Ericson to pursue pewter work. Together with Estrid Ericson, he founded Svenskt Tenn in 1924, which would become a significant player in Swedish design and interior design.
Nils Fougstedt also had a significant career as an illustrator and contributed his drawings to some of the Stockholm newspapers.
His artistic style developed over time from 1920s classicism to a more moderate functionalism with straight and polished surfaces. He mainly worked with materials such as tin, silver, bronze and gold. Nils Fougstedt is believed to be the first to combine tin and brass in works for Svenskt Tenn.
In addition to his work with Svenskt Tenn, Nils Fougstedt collaborated with other prominent designers such as Axel Einar Hjorth and Josef Frank. His works, especially the tin plates used in set tables and tray tables, have become sought after collectors' items. Nils Fougstedt is an icon in the Swedish pewter world and a significant figure in Swedish design history.
