The Sennheiser MD 421 series was first introduced in the 1960s and has been an important part of Sennheiser's microphone range ever since. The microphone was a further development of the predecessor MD 21.

The MD 421 series was groundbreaking for its time as it offered a very versatile sound reproduction and high sound quality for a variety of applications. It was one of the first microphones to introduce a built-in bass roll filter function, making it possible to adapt the microphone's sonic character to different recording and amplification needs.
