Sven Storm was a Swedish painter and draftsman born on December 18, 1905 in Stockholm and died on February 1, 1990. He grew up in Leningrad and received his artistic education at the Academy of Arts in Riga between 1924 and 1926. Storm also made trips to France and Romania. He was politically engaged and enrolled early in the Communist Party, and his art was used as a means of agitation in left-wing politics.
Storm's artwork often depicts burlesque injustices in society with a twinkle in the eye. He also painted pictures of city life, landscapes and anecdotal pictures of folk life. The color scale in his work was explosive and violent. He had a close friendship with the artist Sven X:et Erixson, and they had a common style and depicted life in a similar way.
Storm was part of the artist group Realisterna, which was founded in 1940. Their aim was to oppose kitsch and the graphic art trade. The group published art magazines and organized exhibitions. Storm was also active in AKG (Arbetarkonstnärernas grupp), another artist group that had a more open and humanistic approach. Within AKG, Storm organized courses in plein air painting. The group later formed the association Konst ät Folket, which, among other things, distributed graphics and high-quality art to the public.
