Description

80 x 65 cm. Frame dimensions 105 x 90 cm.

Charles Roka, also known as Róka Károly, was born in 1912 in Hungary and died in 1999 in Bærum, Norway. He was a Hungarian-Norwegian artist who is mainly known for his paintings with gypsy motifs.

Roka studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and then went on study tours in Europe. His travels led him to Norway, where he settled in Høvik, Bærum in 1937. His first painting of a gypsy woman is said to have been done around 1939. By repeating and varying this motif, he created a secure livelihood for himself and his family. Roka's painting is technically skillfully executed, but is mainly regarded as kitsch due to its choice of motifs.

In 2003, a large exhibition of his work was held at the Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum in Tønsberg. The exhibition showed the breadth of Charles Roka's artistry in a new way, including his early motifs of Hungarian folk life.
