Rudi Baerwind - watercolor - color lithograph 43/50 - signed The German painter Rudi Baerwind, born in Mannheim in 1910, begins his studies at the Munich Academy of Arts in order to continue at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and at the Paris Académie Fernand Léger. His first visit to Paris followed in 1932, followed by a second visit in 1936, where Baerwind took part in the «Salon des Surindepéndants». Two years later, Baerwind was taken prisoner by the Russians and, after losing his works in 1945, made a fresh start in his native town. After a surrealistic phase, Baerwind, who initially created moving figure compositions based on early German Expressionism, turned to abstract art, which expanded into an international style in the post-war period.
In 1968, Baerwind founded the experimental "Symposium of the Arts" in Mannheim as a place for exhibitions and meetings and was made an honorary member of the academies in Rome and London. Rudi Baerwind died in November 1982, leaving behind an oeuvre that, in addition to his abstract compositions, includes portraits, material images and concrete reliefs.
